Today – October 27th is the banner ad’s 17th birthday. Display advertising has come a long way in that time – and is now a $multi-billion industry. But like most adolescents, there are a few pimples these days and bit of attitude to boot.

Back in ’94, a clickthrough rate of 20, 30, 40, 50% was not unusual. Today, according to Doubleclick, the industry average hovers around a miserable 0.1%. Like a teenage crush, the novelty of clicking on an ad has passed just as quickly as it arrived.
